What to Do If You Suspect a Gas Leak
What To Do if You Suspect a Gas Leak
Natural gas is a colorless, odorless gas that is lighter than air. It will rise if there is a leak. Natural gas has a distinct odor of a rotten egg.
If you smell a gas leak do not hesitate to call the City of Chipley’s Natural Gas Department at 850-638-6346 between the hours of 6:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
If you suspect a gas leak after hours, please call the after-hours on call phone at 850-260-9687 or 911. A gas technician will be dispatched to your home immediately. There is no charge for this service.
“Do not call from inside your home. Move to a safe distance outside your home before calling.
Signs of a Leak
- A gaseous or hydrocarbon odor
- Blowing or hissing sound
- Dust blowing from a hole in the ground
- Continuous bubbling in a wet or flood area
- A spot of dead or discolored vegetation in an otherwise green area
If You Smell Gas
- If possible, eliminate any source of ignition
- Do not smoke. Do not use lighters or matches
- Do not turn off or on any switches or appliances
- Do not use a phone or cell phone
- Leave the area and go to a safe location
- Call 911 or 850-638-6346 (after hours call 850-260-9687)
- Give the following information
- Type of building or side and location of the odor (inside by appliance or outside of building)
For life threatening emergencies call 911.
